about

The original premise of the album was to create tracks solely using the game Fluid, just as a bit of fun. Fluid was released in 1996 for the Playstation. Using a Playstation and my computer, I recorded samples within the game into my usual music software. The game featured a basic 8-track workstation to record a selection of the 600 samples available into a looping track, usually in an even time-signature. The recording quality was limited because the Playstation's audio output is a 3.5mm jack plug, which is not free of the electrical interference, for instance you can hear the components of the PS1 disc drive working, but I decided this was a nice effect.

To unlock all of the available samples and sounds in the game, you have to control and guide the dolphin you play as through 'cruise stages' which are kind of live recording environments, featuring classic 3D motion videos which help to set a mood. There are 12 cruise stages in the game and I thought it fitting to compose one track for each cruise stage, plus a bonus track. each '[_____]' in the tracklist represents the cruise stage used to create that track e.g. [wire], [shell] etc.

During the project I decided to spice things up by adding other VST instruments, which was not my original intention, but it sounded better to me.

A lot of what you hear was not taken from the game; I added instruments and compositions as well as numerous effects to accompany tracks, but each track is based on one of 12 stages in the game. In other words, much work went into the album as the tracks were not 'ready made'.

This album is absolutely free. It's not about the equipment, it's what you see in it and how it's used.
